Imagine with me for a moment. You are walking alone on the empty subway. The moon is up and the night is quiet. And then, you happened to bump a green bottle with distinctive design. Then suddenly, a white smoke comes out from it forming the image of a genie. Yes it is a genie but instead of three wishes you are only allowed to make just one wish. You were too excited to wish that you uttered what was playing in your mind awhile ago; “a unique stylish car” for you to drive along the city. So, you start thinking of a four-wheeled stylish car like that of Ferrari—finally, you will be able to cruise the road with comfort and fashion then the eye of the onlookers will be magnetized on your car. But your expectation pop off like a balloon pierced by a needle when what was laid to you by the genie is the above picture. The car conceptualized by Matthias Pinkert— it is unique and is stylish and yes it is a car…uhuh! Yes it is. Now, fix your hanging jaw and come back to reality.

What can you say with this concept of Pikert? Did this spoil your imagination of a cozy car or did you love its unique design. It’s great if you like it, because if ever the genie is true, you will not be able to exchange it for another wish. This concept car is called Slide because of its small size. One can certainly cruise the road with real speed using this car. And this wonderfully utilizes an electric motor to power it. However safety, I strongly presume, is out of the question. The package appears weak enough to be driven along with the big cars, especially it is open.

Anyway, that is my perception. Our views vary. My view on this car is somewhat odd though. Oh yes, I will love to drive this at the park but certainly not on the highway. I don’t want to be standing all throughout my travel. That’s tiring. Neither have I wanted to be burn by the scorching heat of the sun. See it does not have any roofing. Worse, I might be gasping all the poisonous emissions from the not environmentally-friendly cars. That’s gross (Lol). Nevertheless, thank you Mr. Pikert for this car. It is a cool creation to trot along the streets though this is not ideal for everyday driving on the highway with all the suites for the executives.

Active Youngsters find Ways in Resolving Global Warming

It seems that our high schools studs are active to battle the climate change huh! There are several high school students now who are actively participating in solving the threat of global warming by conducting some programs, activities, and drives. This is so gladdening. At a young age, these youngsters are not just aware on the present dilemma faced by their planet but are also making an aid to resolve it even little ways. Well, little things count.

Lately, I heard about a young boy from Greensburg High School in Kansas who is too enthusiastic for the green movement for his town after it was destroyed by the tornado. Many admired this young boy as he shared his insight in rebuilding Greensburg. His enthusiasm and insights in rebuilding his town seriously created an impact as an encouraging model for many people.

This time I have read another feature again wherein high school students acted to plant trees to offset the carbon emissions of their school bus. This environmentally-themed group of high schoolers is based in Ontario, Canada. Their actions were actually based on the two environmentally-related education programs they have attended. These two programs are themed as Community Environment Leadership Program and Headwaters Program. Both of these programs strongly inspired the students to take the initiative in aiding the environmental problems.

The program discusses all about carbon emissions and incorporated the goal to offset these. The students were encouraged to take an outdoor activity that will enable them to plant some trees. Meantime, the goal is to plant the trees donated by the local nursery, which ranges to 1,100 trees, that’s really plenty. These trees are planned to be planted into the former wooden site but was accidentally wrecked by the fire a year ago. I do believe that there are still numbers of youngsters out there who have great concern to our environment. And our part as adults is to impart the awareness and knowledge they necessitate.

Uhmmm…it is a capsule car isn’t? My first glance on the picture reminds of a Protecter & Gamble medicine capsule. The only thing is, this one is accompanied with wheels (Lol! I haven’t taken my breakfast yet, maybe that’s why). I got a vague perception on this but others’ perception is far more realistic. They say this one is a motorcycle sidecar because it is equipped with three wheels only. However, such perception is also inaccurate. Well, every person is free to express his or her own perception. But to correct some wrong notion, this capsule-looking stuff is actually a pedal powered enclosed car called Leiba. Leiba is a known commercial manufacturer of velomobiles. Velomobiles are more common to people as bicycle car. Yes! It is right; the cute three-wheeled vehicle you see in the above picture is powered by human strength. Nice form of leg stretching!

Now, as we can see, this vehicle is too enclosed. The purpose of this design is to protect the occupants from harsh weather and from any collisions, which may possibly occur anytime. But what are more striking about this car are its earth-friendly and zero emission features. Leiba certainly aims to provide people with a beautiful vehicle combined with aerodynamic design and earth-friendly locomotion in the midst of street traffic. So, to those who are frequently annoyed in speeding in the middle of the traffic jam, Leiba is the right car to drive. This vehicle is also convenient to drive into the shopping mall. And if the traffic space appears to be so crowded, the owner only needs to look for a small space enough for its size. Then, presto! You can already park this auto without requiring you a high parking cost. Now, don’t think Leiba is too little too hold your baggages. If I have the same hair as his, I doubt if I can still face the camera confidently and muster a smile. I have been into the junkyard and I saw some of the used cars that pile up in one side. They look like grotesque metals. In fact, I can hardly imagine how stylish they were when they were still new. While I was looking at them, my mind started to count the approximate numbers of vehicles that run in the city. It’s tough for there are lots. How much more if I started to calculate the entire vehicles throughout the world? It can be mind-numbing.

Thinking that there are plenty of vehicles and produced vehicles on earth, I wonder where they will be piled up once they reach the stage of corrosion.

Now, I came to understand, in a deeper sense, the drive of EU to turn the 85 percent of the vehicles as recyclable at the end of their lifespan. The question is how can they be recycled? Well, I had a hard grasped on it before until I came into the site of Uncommongoods. They have created a series of beer and wine glasses. These glasses are handmade from the windshields of old vehicles. Not that alone, they also designed drink coasters to protect your coffee table. Honda Civic GX Grabs All the Awards for the Greenest Car

The production cannot be made fast enough according to the Honda. Besides, this is only sold in two states: New York; and California. Truth is one dealership stated that there are more than 80 people who are waiting in long line to buy this car. But if one think he has an ample amount of patience, then, Honda Civic GX is ideal to own.

Olmix and the Wonder of Chemistry

There is indeed a wonder in science of the nature in matter also known as “chemistry”. Personally, chemistry is one of the subjects I used to hate when I was in high school, especially the memorization of elements. My brain can hardly remember them so I really struggled a lot to pass it. That is why I am always amazed whenever I hear another breakthrough relating to this field. Just like what the French company, Olmix, introduced lately.

Olmix made another breakthrough in chemistry—a biogas sourced from algae and waste—which powers car. This company focuses on what they call ‘green chemistry.” They have introduced a sample vehicle powered by this new form of biofuel.

The fuel of this sample car is ingeniously sourced from green algae with a combination of animal vegetable waste. The animal waste is known to contain a large number of highly pollutant nitrates including green algae proliferation. And these stuffs are actually more familiar as a problem at the beaches in most of the region.

For that reason, this fuel was not that easy to produce. Olmix need to develop a new form of “green refinery.” They plan to install this in Ploermel town, which is envisioned to be finished by this year. However, the great effort invested into the production of this fuel is not a waste for this carries more than one benefit. This new fuel, which does not use any profound chemicals for its production, also generates a fertilizer as an offshoot.

I can hardly imagine the profoundness of the minds of these chemists. Gee! (lol)

Patrol Cars: To Idle or To Switch Efficient Vehicle Unit?

The rising fuel prices have created great impact to numerous consumers of today. This impact was great enough that they were compelled to change some of their driving habits just to conserve fuel consumption. Certainly, instead of allowing the police units from idling, there can surely be a better option to reduce gas consumption. Like for instance, why not opt for a more efficient vehicle? In fact, this is what the other agencies have actually done. This is testified by Cocoa’s Acting Police chief Mark Klayman by saying, “our fuel usage is actually less than what it was last year because we shifted from Crown Victorias to Chevy Impalas. The Impalas provide better mileage.”

Sometimes, confusion is really inevitable. I never thought that there are still some who thought of biodiesel as ethanol or vice-versa. The May 3 editorial featured in The Washington Post entitled “The Greening of Montgomery” showed a common misunderstanding between biodiesel and ethanol. The editorial mentioned a line saying: “One measure would switch the country’s fleet of diesel cars to biofuels. Considering the impact ethanol has had on the environment and food prices, we urge Montgomery County to explore alternatives." Biodiesel is different from ethanol. People need to understand the clear distinction between these two to come up into better environmental decisions.

To avoid confusion, we only need to focus on the procedure of their production and ingredients. Biodiesel is a domestic renewable fuel taken from vegetable oils. Ethanol on the other hand is produced by fermenting and distilling sugar crops and starch like maize, potatoes, sugar-cane, vegetable and fruit waste, sorghum, wheat, and even cornstalks. Crispy Noodle: Not just for Platter but Also for Cars

Whenever I hear the term “noodles,” I usually think of a mercy killer food. Yes, I do and I really hate eating this. This food is directly synonymous to the term non-sense for me because of the great amount of preservatives it contains. Gross! But allow me to make segue; this non-sense stuff I say is now converted into a worthy stuff. Well, I am not saying I will eat up all my words and eat this stuff now and say “cool! This is healthy huh!” I won’t do that certainly. I used the adjective “worthy” for this crispy noodle membrane because this is now developed as an answer for carbon emission reduction and at the same time to power up the coming generation of hydrogen automobiles.

The geniuses who develop this project are a team of chemists at the University of Manchester. They are currently exploring a polymer, which structure is similar to crispy noodles, as a possible sequestration mechanism to be established on coal-fired power plants. The development of this project is under the time frame of 18 months and is lead by Peter Budd, also a chemist of the university’s Organic Material Innovation Center (OMIC). He will lead the investigation that concerns to the use of the “polymer of intrinsic microposity” (PIM) as a component of catalytic membrane system to lock in and recover carbon dioxide. This scheme is actually similar to the past technologies performed before.

However, these polymers were not given enough attention before because they are perceived to effectively pack space, an important prerequisite in storing hydrogen. Also, what makes this project more different from the past is its high microposity. Through this, this becomes useful in providing an affordable and convenient way of storing the gas. Prior tests with PIMs showed that these can significantly capture good amount hydrogen—about 3 percent of their weight. Now, Budd with his team are planning to double that amount in the coming years. According to Budd, achieving 6 percent is enough to make a car run for 300 miles even with no refill. Apparently, this project is catchy because it can lead to the utilization of PIMs as a device for the hydrogen’s secure storage and transportation.

This artist was able to create classic cars out of the bits of woods that we normally thrown into the garbage. He is really innovative. I say his innovativeness range to the supreme level. Maybe if this car can hit the road, he will be called as the “green man.”

His innovativeness is a good way of telling people that we cannot just throw almost every used thing in the garbage. Another concept car was introduced just recently. Whow! It seems that I am getting so much fond with these concept cars. But anyhow, I am not diverting from my focus since most of the concept cars that are being designed now are made to be environmentally-friendly. Another environmentally-friendly concept car that was introduced is the Airwaves. One look at this car, one can instantaneously note that this is a concept car—the appearance is so bizarre.

This bizaare look of Airwaves was designed by Lei Liu. As I was looking on it intently, it thought of a futuristic city. It seems that this car belongs in that place. Well anyway, Liu designed this car to promote a stress-free transportation. It was said that through the use of this car, getting late into work is no longer a worry (Good heavens! This can be the answer to my prayer). Essentially, the idea for this mini car is to provide easy parking, comforting ride, deliver safe trip, and to bring out no harm to the environment. Oh-oh! Let me not miss this, this ride can be so much fun to drive because of its cute style too. I bet you won’t argue with me, if you do, you might have missed that good taste for a car.

With regards to the features, this concept car presents an electronic door that can rotate in vertical direction, getting away from the hinge on the exterior. This is also designed to be safe from dents and scrapes that wrecks the appearance of the car. Aside from that, one can never be bored to own and drive this car for located at the back of this is the LCD screen. When the driver is caught in the middle of the heavy traffic jam, he can simply watch news, weather reports and other stuffs he wants. I am wondering whether their minds are really that weird in nature. Well, anyway, another concept car that rapt my senses is the Silvervogel. Even if I don’t take a careful look on it, I immediately noticed its odd-looking body design. Notice those wheels that look like skeletal veers and its shell that can be likened to a canister. Well, it looks really odd but its looks really cool somehow too. Am I already talking weird also? (Lol)

Oh! Anyway, this concept car is not only attention-grabbing in sight; its features are likewise attention-grabbing too. It never uses a gas. It has no engine. It is neither ran by electricity nor by solar power. This car runs on gravity. So, what does it mean? Mother Earth will surely love this creation. It will never tear down her essence. The Silvervogel Gravity Concept Car is intended as a racing car. Well, this is indeed a racing car and the driver of this auto will depend on gravity to hoist its speed. My question here though is, wouldn’t it lose control on its speed? It seems to me that the speed of this car is somewhat unstable.

What can you say on the car shown in the above picture? It’s really unique isn’t? As for me, I see it as a canoe equipped with wheels to make it capable to run on land. Notice the wheels; they are quite alike to the wheels of the mountain bike. Anyone can say that the appearance of this auto can really be not that ideal for a commercial. Although this comes in a small size, its features are truly impressive. This auto is safe to drive since it is packed with safety features such as dent-proof ABS panel, dual-braking system, steel space frame, and side impact beams. Because it has a synthetic body, this can ran around the city without being scratched or dented.

This car, however, is convenient only when driving for work, market, school, or anywhere within the area of the city. In short, this car is not designed for distant travels. These are actually among the consequences of owning this car. Aside from the fact that this cannot reach the energy of a petrol engine, this cannot be driven any farther out of the city too. For some, this consequence may not be too mush of an advantage. But for those who are not fond of speedy driving and does not have any plans to drive the auto out of the city, Reva is a practical choice.

Another consequence of this car is its limited space. Because of its small size, this is not ideal for a family though this can carry four passengers. However, only the two passengers at the front can sit comfortably. Take note, the two seats at the front is good for persons with average height. So, persons with a height more than 5’10 may better opt for another car. Moreover, the seats at the back are more fitted for kids than for adults. Or maybe this can be more appropriate for the luggage or shopping bags than for persons. But if in case, there is no choice, well, the two passengers at the back might just wish for a fast travel to stretch out their body. Not a great idea though.

So even though Reva has competitive features, it only has limited buyers. If I will be asked, I will say that the most probable buyers of this car are those people who will make this car as their second auto or people who buy cars for the sake of novelty. Likewise, the former CEO of Lotus Engineering who is presently the Chairman of the Joint Venture Company, Mr. Albert Lam, has also stated his excitement for the coming release of Alias, the same excitement he felt when initiating this project. He believes that through the first development they conducted on the key engineering and technology of the project, they can possibly release Alias into production around the second quarter of 2009. He also added that they will be employing the contemporary services of Youngman for the manufacture of this auto.

How dedicated are we to drive even greener to ensure that our environment is safe from the toxic emitted by our driving machines? There are several means done to make our cars more environment-friendly. For sure, we can do something more to achieve a far better result especially if we really focus on our objective.

What do I mean? Well, it is only simple; I am just trying to say that we should not be contented on the thought that we know the proper ways of greener driving. Like for instance, we can drive an eco-friendly car or we can apply the proper practices or driving technique to save more fuel. Regular tune-ups to lessen the pollution emitted by our cars could also be of big help. These are just but only some ways to keep ourselves on track in driving green and clean. But aside from following those green practices, we can do something more. It just happens that we are constantly boxed to what is conventional. We settle on our limitation. But that should not be the real case. We can go far beyond our limitation. That way, we can do something more for our environment.

So, what else can we do to pursue our drive for greener driving? The first thing is, we can speak up. Speak about what? There are lots actually but the main point here is, through this we can become an advocate; maybe an advocate for better public transportation, better sidewalks, intense standards for fuel-economy, and more bike lanes. We can be an influence. That is true. In fact, we can also use that influence to our co-workers. For instance, we can initiate the idea in generating a network of ride-sharing to go at work and ask them to follow by explaining the purpose. I bet it is not impossible for some to get a raise in salary or in position in the job because of this. But that is not the main motive here though.

Now, if you are a boss, say you are an employer (I am neither a boss nor an employer so I will just address this to my readers), that only means you got a stronger influence to your employees. You can encourage them to conduct a greener driving. Nowadays, there are numerous bosses who are using rewards and bonuses to motivate their employees and join them in their drive towards greener driving and some other green stuff. In addition, you can also finance tickets for public transportation. And more importantly, you can become a worthy example through your own choice of transportation.

Additionally, we can also start to push a congestion charge in downtown places. It is undeniable that because of the great number of cars now, there are frequent instances wherein these cars congest in one place, especially in city center. I experienced it and it is really terrible. To avoid too much congestion, a fine could be imposed. This maybe a bit gruesome for some but I suppose this idea can really work.

Lastly, we can also set the initiative for a coop like veggie-oil or biodiesel coop. If in case biodiesel is not yet available in our place, we can simply call up other interested parties. Then, all together, we can start up a cooperative. This time, Los Angeles has implemented such scheme including other cities.

Truth is, they did an ingenious decision. In fact, these two guys have earned a prestigious name now.

Let’s look back how it all started. It was in the year 2006 when Pakenham and Goldtone had the idea of starting out a company of environmentally-friendly taxi. The idea was rebuked by others saying it was nonsense and is next to impossibility. Only Pakenham’s mother and girlfriend believed one hundred percent in their idea. [sa1] But these two guys were not discouraged. Instead, they pursued what they believe in. They executed the idea even at the price of their prestigious job and great income. The road to fulfillment was not that easy. To start out, Pakenham decided to sold his L150,000 even to raise money for their endeavor.,[sa2] And luckily, they were blessed to have the backing of high profile people like BSkyB Officials, Buckingham Palace Executives, and the famous climate conscious, Al Gore.

As they raised their environmentally-friendly taxi company, “Green Tomato Cars,” was given birth. They started out with barely five eco-friendly cars. But their progress was fast enough. Just after few years of hard work and dedication to their goal, the company now owned 60 Toyota Prius Hybrids. This time, the Green Tomato Cars is regarded as the first green taxi service in London. With all of their taxis running around the area, they can carry 500-600 passengers each day. According to Pakenham, all of their employees including their drivers are recruited from the local community. They are also using the local garages, vehicle sign-writers and service agents for their Green Tomato Cars.

Additionally, the company also purchased climate car carbon credits to increase their offsets, team up with the local community to encourage environmental awareness and support a number of green initiatives. Their hard work paid off as the Green Tomato Cars received a Fleet Hero Award from the Department for Transport. And it was last year when the company was acknowledged as the WTM 2007 World Tourism Day.

The Green Tomato Cars are suited for people who care for the environment, for corporate clients who do not just solely aim for lofty profits, and for people simply want a fast, comfortable car no matter what the negative effects may be. It will be not that surprising if the company of these two ingenious guys will be recognized as the top among the environmental goods and services’ providers in London. They ensure that the cars they design are going to be 85 percent recyclable and with 95 percent recoverability. Ford: Making an Environmental Impact

Ford has currently developed foam for the auto, which is particularly used on the seats, and with materials made from 40 percent soy. According to the company, by simply using soy, the environmental impact of keeping the tush comfortable is lessened to about 75 percent. So now, Ford has this plan of putting soy in the seats of almost 45,000 automobiles they will produce this year.

How many people all throughout the world buy a car each day? I am not aware about the exact statistic. But I am sure, there are many. Look, there are numerous cars that are being produced every now and then. I will just notice one day that a new model was sent out to the auto market again. So, if there are great car productions, there are also great car buyers. Simple logic.

Now, since there are numerous selections, it is definitely hard to choose for the right car. Buying a car needs a thorough review. One cannot just pick according to the glamour of the auto, but according to its features, and more importantly, if it is environmentally friendly. As responsible individuals, we need to pay attention to the last thing mentioned. Before we settle on one car, we must ask ourselves “Will this not kill the Earth?” Nothing will beat the environmentally responsible autos. For this reason, I came up with my green car list in the hope that this can somehow help my readers who have plans to buy a new car. Allow me to give you my list of reliable, environment friendly cars on the road.

Let me start my list to a super green car named as Honda Civic GX NVG. This vehicle is powered by natural gas. This is called super green auto because it is ranked first as the greenest cars by the GreenerCars.org. However, owning this car includes a little sacrifice. The fuel stations for natural gas are not spread out like the fuel stations of petroleum gases. So, refueling may not be that easy. There are still numerous areas that do not have such facilities. With this case, one needs to look for particular filling stations that have compressed natural gas or if not, have his own stock.

Second in my list is the Toyota Prius. Is there any environmentalist who is not aware of this car? Nobody I bet. This vehicle was formerly the greenest car among the greenest. This is an electric/gas hybrid that is worthy of its price. This vehicle is undoubtedly sensible and vivacious. This is good for five seats with a cruising range of about 500 miles. So, to those who want to create an environmental statement, they may settle on this car. And they can freely shout “I am green.”

Third on my list is the Honda Civic Hybrid. Hmm…Honda made it twice to my list didn’t you notice? Well, I have no biases though. This brand really produces easy fuel vehicles. This is a Hybrid electric model that uses the combination of gasoline and electricity. Like Toyota Prius, this is also capable in carrying five occupants. Aside from being green this is also superb when it comes to drivability.

Fourth in my list is the Smart car. This car really looks so cute. This is only good for two seats though. Well, anyway, this is a good choice if the prupose is just driving around the city. See, aside from being stylish and innovative in nature, this car is also green. What a wonderful package!

Fifth in my list is the 2008 Toyota Yaris. This vehicle is a wonderful choice for those who have great concern for the environment. This vehicle is also economical since this is fuel-efficient. Aside from that this is also roomy and has a viable performance. More significantly, this car can go to a practical mileage.

Ops! This is not the end of my list though. I still have some. So, for those who want more selections that are worth considering, you may wait until I gather the remaining green cars that are included in my list.

Green house effect heats up the team of Toyota. I think so for they have been continually produced eco-friendly cars, particularly hybrids. Now, just recently, they have announced new concept car that redefines the essence of an eco-friendly vehicle namely 1/X Concept. Toyota showed its new creation in Chicago Auto Show for the very first time. I bet lots of people are paying great attention to know about this car. Such reaction of people is not surprising anyway since Toyota gave birth to Prius—the Hybrid car that has been the standard measurement of the following hybrids.

1/x concept is the latest attempt of Toyota in redefining the green vehicle. This time, Toyota defines it as weigh less. Aside from that, this car was also designed to have a transparent roof, insulating heat and noise that comes in bio-plastic taken from ramie plants and kenaf. The following green cars that I will present here are the continuation of my Green Car List. In my last entry, I mentioned the top five green cars. Here, I will add seven more green cars so all in all there will be 12 selections. Anyway, these green cars are randomly listed in my list so each one can be considered a good buy. Why not? Aside from the fact that these are friendly to the environment, these cars are also packed with viable features and glamorous looks.

I will start with the number six on my list, the Nissan Altima Hybrid. This car is using the technology of electric hybrid borrowed from Toyota along with Nissan’s 158 horsepower 2.5 liter 4 cylinder gas engine. No wonder, this car has an increased speed and is fuel efficient. So the owner of this car can expect greater mileage. This auto is also capable of carrying five occupants.

The number seven in my list is the Toyota Corolla. This is just a bit larger compared to Toyota Yaris and a bit smaller than Toyota Camry. The good thing about this car is its capability to run for 28 city mpg and 37 mpg highway using its 1.8 liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine. All of these were made possible without using an expensive technology. The body of this auto is also sharp-looking. More importantly, to own this car, one need not spend very large sums for this may only cost about $16,000.

The number eight on my list is the Mini Copper. One look at this car and one can say “Oh boy! That’s really stylish.” Its unique bulldog appearance is really appealing matched by the well-blended color; this car is really so appealing. So, I really suppose that driving this auto can be lots of fun. Of course, aside from the style, the features are also environment friendly. Next is the number nine on my list, the Ford Focus; this new Ford Focus was just redesigned for 2008. If one is searching for a family car, this one is a great choice. This can run in the speed of 24 city mpg and 35 highway mpg. This also has 2.0 liter 4 cylinder and undoubtedly, has a strong engine.

The number 10 in my list is the Toyota Camry Hybrid. This car is actually the most popular car in the US because of its satisfying performance. Several of these models were tested and all of them showed impressive performance. If the choice of the prospective buyer is a car that has a mid-size room but with competitive performance, Camry Hybrid is a good choice.

On the 11^th is the Honda Civic. To those who are really green-minded. I mean, to those people who mind the environment, Honda Civic is definitely not a wrong choice. This car runs smoothly and is actually a model of the customary efficiency. This has 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine.

Lastly, the number 12 green car in my list is the Honda Fit. This car really appears to be so funky in style. Now that the world is experiencing a climate crisis, green cars are truly in demand. Maybe you have experienced traveling round in round just looking for a space to park on your car. That is really a waste of time. In such situation I always say to myself that this wouldn’t happen if only I am driving a motorcycle. With a motorcycle, finding a parking spot is not a hassle. In addition to that, this two-wheeler is cheaper and more economical.

However, I was still pushed to drive a car. I feel like I can never trade the comfort I get from a car than the fun in the motorcycle. My car has larger space for my cargoes like groceries. In a car, I can bring with me my little cousins to enjoy the ride. And of course, I don’t need to suck all the pollution that drifts in the air. The last reason really made me stick with my car than the motorcycle.

But I have known that there is a far more significant reason for me to stick on driving a car than a motorcycle. Guardian.co.uk, a British site that features news, reviews, and comments from the leading liberal voices, featured that motorbikes is far worse contributor of air pollution as compared to a car. To make it more accurate, the featured article written by Ian Sample, a science correspondent in The Guardian, showed that motorcycle is 16 times worse than a car when it comes to emitting green house gasses. Can cars run on water? I doubt if there are car manufacturers who are already designing such car. Nonetheless, I was just trying to trick you with the picture above.

My discussion here will not really tackle about cars that literally run on water. (Although with the technology today, such car can undoubtedly turn out to be one). Instead, my discussion will focus on cars powered by water. I think we are all aware about that—water used as fuel. Years ago, it was really claimed that tap water can possibly be used as fuel to run an automobile. Now, who claimed such fact? Definitely, it is the inventors. But where are those inventors and where is their invention?

That is the usual question that often ran in our minds, which the answers until now still remain vague. In the succeeding context, let us distinguish the two persons who were behind this concept. Let us know the two brilliant scientists who have ingeniously thrived to use water as an alternative for fuels. The two inventors who paved way to use natural resources to get away from the poison produced by the fossil fuels.

One of these two inventors is a man named Stanley Meyer, a native of Ohio. He received three patents in 1990 for his water fuel cell device invention. This invention made it possible to convert water into oxygen and hydrogen, utilizing lesser amount of energy. Unfortunately, this device was not utilized today because Meyer met an untimely death. He was not able to share his formula to anyone for he was killed on March 21, 1998. He was allegedly poisoned by an unidentified suspect. According to the result of the autopsy, Meyer died because of cerebral aneurysm. The sad thing here is before he died, he was granted with the amount of $50 Million to turn his technology into production.

The second inventor is Daniel Dingle, a scientist from the Philippines. He adapted the general concept of Meyer’s water fueled car although he applied different manner to achieve the same accomplishment. According to Dingel, he was using this invention since 1969 in his own car. So, He was able to travel around the Philippines, consuming only one liter of tap water for one hour travel. In some instances, he even claimed that he is using sea water. Unfortunately, the ingeniousness of this Filipino scientist was not paid back by his own country. This is the reason why his feat also failed to triumph.

It is disheartening to know that the most convenient way to power a car was already carried out but failed to push through because of lack of support and misfortunes. Or probably the monopolization of oil companies has something to do with this failure too. Just imagine if this invention has been into the market today. The oil companies might be on the verge of bankruptcy now. I assume they will never allow that to happen even if it means compromising the life of the people and the life of the earth. Such ingenuity deserves a positive feedback than discouraging skepticism.

Anyhow, it is never yet too late to develop those inventions initiated by these two geniuses.

Our technology has gone a long way that every once in a while, new cars are being promoted in the market. Oops! These cars are not the so-so cars. These cars are designed with technical innovations and features that are helpful to the environment. Because of the technological advancement, cars from the past were transformed into improved cars now. And more significantly, with the aid of this technological advancement, the ideas for cars are now tangible products.

As what I have mentioned, this technological advancement is helpful to our environment too, and not just to the overall appearance and horsepower of the auto. For instance, cars are now developed to have lower resistance to achieve better fuel economy. Also, cars are aimed to be lighter in weight. This way, cars will have lesser mass to speed up and move around. And this means low power requirement. In short, because of the aid of technological advancement, cars now are transformed into something more efficient.

Among the products of technological advancement in cars is the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vehicle. The LPG vehicle is more convenient to run on the road compared to petrol or diesel cars. Aside from the fact that this is cheaper, this is also friendlier to the environment. In fact, this becomes the more practical alternative vehicle fuel in UK. This does not differ to any other cars when it comes to the efficiency in handling. The only difference lies in the benefits it brings—environmentally, economically and socially.

We have raped Mother Earth.

Were you stunned? That is the reality. We have raped our Mother Earth. Since the industry started to prosper, people have slowly abused the environment too. That is the primary reason why the earth is on the verge of climate crisis now. The global warming issue is continually on the rise. This is a disheartening fact but there is no one else to blame but us.

Along with the boom of the industry is the usage of cars. These cars emit CO2 into the atmosphere as the result of burning of fossil fuels. Along with the CO2 are the other gases like nitrogen oxide and methane, which are responsible in trapping the heat just about the earth. This is the very reason why the environmentalists are driving more people to use the environmentally friendly cars instead of the traditional ones—to lessen the harm brought by cars to our environment.

It was mentioned in my early entries that the emission of cars are one of the great causes of the climate crisis we are suffering this time. Many are aware about this; hence, many environmentalists and organizations are encouraging to stop the use of these traditional cars, which may only aggravate the effects of our environment.

Now, the result of the drive appears to be so positive. More and more people have supported the drive to use green cars. More importantly, these people have now taken their moral obligation into the planet they well in by opting to these green vehicles that has lower emission. The manufacturers are producing numerous green cars this time too. Therefore, it is not impossible to combat pollution with these highly innovated cars that are made compatible to our environment.

Tata Nano: An Achievement or a Disaster?

“Nano shines at Geneva auto show.” That’s a line mentioned in The Times of India last March 5, 2008. Many people are indeed celebrating when the world’s cheapest car, Tata Nano, was launched by the automakers in India. At the amount of $2500, one can drive a three meter long car good for four occupants and can run for 65 mph. And at that amount too, one can buy a DVD player in a Lexus. Imagine how cheap it is.

No wonder, it will be so easy for numerous people to buy themselves a car. Those who dream for a car but cannot buy one because of its lofty price can buy now. Those who own motorcycles can relatively turn it into four wheels car this time. Tata Nano is indeed convenient to buy for most people, an innovation that is friendly to the purse. But the question is, is it friendly to the environment? I can hardly imagine the road when more and more people start to own a car. Our environment will surely be at stake.

James Kanter posted in one of his blog entries in International Herald Tribune that many environmentalists are largely attacking Nano including its progenies as a threat to the environment. Think about this, based on the last calculation, the number of vehicles in India range only to 5.4 million vehicles. Today, Delhi alone has added 650 new vehicles on the road each day. Therefore, there can be a chance that the number of vehicles in India can increase for more than five folds in two more decades. With a population of about 16.5 million in India, there can be road congestion.

Many of the environmentalists fear that cars like Tata Nano can turn the street into a nightmare. When more and more people own a car, there will be more emissions. Therefore, there will also be more pollution. Tata Nano os indeed cleverly crafted. But the fact remains that such cleverness can result to a disaster in the future.

Hybrids are the hottest cars today. Almost everyone wants a hybrid car. Why not? These cars provide the answers to consumer demands for low fuel consumption, low noise pollution and more importantly, aside from their great styles, these too, are environmental-friendly. Hybrid cars are indeed fuel efficient and produce lower emissions as compared to the usual cars. Hence, its name resounds to prospective car buyers.

Uh-oh! Don’t be alarmed; there is nothing to be startled really. I am just going to remind everyone who joined the drive for greener driving that there are some essential things that are commonly neglected. Often, we focus to what is common, a common practice to be specific, that we forget to consider some details. For instance, sometimes we tend to neglect the proper way of handling gasoline in our cars and at times too, we are not that aware that a wrong parking can create an effect to the environment.

I just want to remind everyone that it pays to be extra careful, especially when owning a vehicle. It is not just simply filling in your need for transportation. Owning a car also goes with a responsibility. So what are these extra cautions that every vehicle owners need to observe. Well, we really need to be cautious about lots of things. We need to be cautious when we drive. We need to be cautious on our choices of fuels. We need to be cautious in what we do like the way we maintain our cars. If we are not going to be extra cautious in handling our car, there can be a tremendous consequence—maybe not directly to us, but to our environment.

If you have observed, some of the Americans are not that cautious at times when handling gasoline. Take note, gasoline is a dangerous substance. Unfortunately, some of our fellows really take it for granted, neglecting the fact that its fumes are carcinogenic and lethal. Now, the moment gasoline spilled into the ground, it is capable in creating a threat to somebody else’s health. When gasoline spilled into the water, it is also capable in polluting it and is surely poisonous to anyone who drinks it, animals for instance. This thing is also flammable. So, a single mistake in handling gasoline can end to a mishap.

We should also be careful on how we park our car. Take note that just by wrong parking, your car may cause harm to the environment already. During summer, it is advisable that you park under the shade. This way the car can remain in cool temperature and can reduce fuel’s evaporation. Better if you have a garage so you can keep your car warm in times of winter and cool in times of summer.

Nearly all of the vehicle drivers today are aware of the environmental impact that a car can cause into our environment. But since cars are part of our daily routine, we may still see them driving their car off the road. As if they never care at all. But that is not actually the real case; truth is you may even see some environmentalists who still drive off their cars just like me. But that doesn’t mean that we never care for the environment. And that definitely doesn’t mean that we neglect our responsibility to Mother Earth.

Allow me to say that I am an environmentalist but I am not too idealistic. I can see the practical side of using cars in our daily living. They are too convenient that they make some things easier for us like moving from one place to another. Therefore, it is definitely hard to mandate all the vehicle drivers, including us, to drive less. Since this is the case, we, responsible citizens, prefer to take an alternative to lessen the environmental impact caused by our cars to the environment.

There are several alternatives that we can actually practice. One is to drive an environmentally friendly car, this is the best help we can do. Second is to minimize our driving. This practice is a friendly habit to Mother earth. Another one is to keep our autos well maintained and to observe driving practices that are helpful to the environment at the same time.

Let us elaborate on the last mentioned alternative. This is helpful to those who do not own an environmentally friendly vehicle yet. The following are few suggestions one may follow to actualize his or her concern to our environment:

Maintain the car very well: Conduct regular tune-ups, change the oil regularly, and then keep the auto emissions controls in fine shape. Doing these will significantly lessen the air pollution. This practice will also save the gas mileage of the car from premature worn-out.

Natural gas runs the auto. Believe it or not, natural gas can now make it. There are certainly few people who know about this now for sure. Many people would not even think that natural gas can be an alternative for gasoline. If we are going to rationalize it, we will think right away for its conventional use. Natural gas is basically used to cook food, heat water, dry garments, and help in producing energy. It is definitely a gas which is different from the liquid gasoline that runs the auto.

But natural gas can certainly make an auto run. It was featured by Chris Woodyard in USA Today a year ago that there is already an existing magical auto powered by natural gas. What make this auto magical are its offered features and advantages. Natural gas auto presents an ecological relief. This auto produces few emissions that make it the cleanest internal-combustion powered auto on the road. Consequently, this offers us the chance to get away from our dependence on foreign oil.

Nissan Pivo-2 Presents RA, Our New Companion on the Road

Have you experienced traveling for 12 hours straight? Well, I did. And since I experienced that I think I already earned the right to say that traveling alone is the most lonesome thing to do. I have no one to talk to. No one to share what I observe or what I feel. Worse, I can hear no voice except mine and the singer squeaking at the audio.

Ops! Don’t overreact yet, sorry if you perceived a mushy tone as if I’m doing my online journal. This still has a relation to the environment for I will share about the cool concept car I’ve came across early this morning—the Nissan Pivo 2. This concept car is one of the proofs that the imaginations of the auto designers have gone so far. What is more amazing is that they were able to actualize their imaginations.

I can share with you plenty of reasons why I love this concept car. And I bet you will love it too. First, this is, of course, environmentally friendly. This is motorized by lithium-ion batteries so it is not harmful to the environment. Second, this comes with creative geometrical design that it can possibly turn to 380 degrees. So, making maneuvers and parking is a cinch with this concept car. Third, this comes with a personal robot called RA who can talk! Aside from talking, RA is also capable in detecting the driver’s mood to help him drive the car safer and better. Wonderful isn’t?! This is made possible through the help of the voice and facial-recognition software.

So, to my environmentalist readers there is something new that we can add to our lists when we are about to buy a car. Aside from fuel efficiency, safety and style, we may add a “talking robot.” This is really cool! In fact, I’m excited to drive one on the road. Surely traveling for 12 hours straight with RA will spare me from the feeling of traveling all alone.

Certainly, with Nissan Pivo-2, we will not just drive greener but cuter too.

This question is commonly asked by many people nowadays. I bet, even those who are not auto enthusiasts try to ask question like this. They just can’t help it. There are lots of reviews and features about Hybrids that can really cause people to wonder how incomparable or unexceptional their conventional car really is to this type of vehicle. Are you seeing plenty of old tires or household waste in your home? If you do, you might really be tired of the sight for these all are considered mess, not unless you dwell in a junk shop. But hey! Unfortunately, biodiesels are not all the same. There is also a type of biofuel which cause harm to the wild life habitats and at times causes the devastation of forests. And these needs to be noted by the consumers to ensure that they are getting fuels that are environmentally sustainable. Example of environmentally sustainable fuel is the one developed by Coskata. The thermochemical technology they developed is claimed to lessen the CO2 productions of bioethanol for about 84 percent. “If I have lots of money I’ll buy concept car!” This is the statement of my friend when we were in the middle of our car-centered conversation. “Cool!” My other friend added. It is certainly exhilarating to dash on the road driving a stylish concept car. But sorry for my friend, a concept car is yet a concept, and not yet out for the market. As what is familiar to everyone, a concept car also called as show car is designed to show a concept—in technology, new styling, and more.

Often, when we speak of concept cars we immediately think of a car with hot and unique features. That is definitely right. But concept cars are further improved this time. They are not solely aimed to feed the imaginations of the consumers with glamorous looks and distinctive features. This time, the mind of concept cars designers went green too. This means, they also make their creations compatible to the environment—giving birth to green concept cars.

One of these green concept cars is the Chevrolet Volt, a concept electric car. This car is more than just glamorous, this car is fascinating. Imagine: driving this car for 40 miles without a single drop of gas. That is really very futuristic in nature. So how’s that? This car is designed with wheels run by electric motor. The concept is really flexible; electricity may come from a reservoir of lithium-oil batteries or fuel cell. And this can be recharged either by the mains or by the 1.0-liter, 3 cylinder turbo engines powering a generator.

The main idea for this car is to lessen the Americans’ oil dependence. Drive it for about 40 miles each day, recharge it overnight, and the fast battery-Volt will never require any petrol. In fact, according to Robert “Bob” Lutz, Vice Chairman of GM (General Motors) for Global Product Development, Volt is the most exciting program he has ever been involved with in his entire automotive career. Who knows? Maybe after few years more the fuel-cell version can win over the use of battery. And my friend may surely save for enough sums to afford this model as soon as this is out in the market.

I bet, many of the vehicle owners are aiming to use biodiesel for their vehicle. Why wouldn’t they? Biodiesel is more environment-friendly compared to the regular diesel fuel. However, one of the hindering factors to these consumers in using biodiesel for their vehicle is its quite “expensive” price. Notice the researches that featured biodiesel and its benefits to the environment, there are lots. Unfortunately, only few discuss its affordability. And this may be hurting on the purse of the average consumers.

Biodiesel is indeed more expensive compared to the regular petroleum diesel at the present. Try browsing on online news and some biodiesel updates and you will see several sites saying this. So practically speaking, even though the average consumers want to participate in minimizing the production of CO2 produced by their vehicles, many just settle on the regular petroleum diesel. Why not, if they cannot just practically afford its price? This is the heart-breaking reality.

Hydrogen Fuel Cars - Out on the Streets!

Automobiles are among the top culprits for global warming. This has been a big buzz these days, and I’ve been hearing it anywhere I may be – from friends and colleagues to almost complete strangers whenever I’m in public places like restaurant or bus (Sorry I’ve eavesdropped. I just can’t help it especially if they’re talking about the environment.

There is a misconception on this though. The culprit for the Earth’s climate crisis is not actually the car itself, it is the fuel! Yes, it is the CO2 or the residual gases produced from burning fossil fuel that is really harmful to the environment. Well, car fuels actually come from fossil sources, from Hydrocarbon to be specific, which is actually one of the top pollutants in our environment. During the combustion process, the hydrocarbon elements fuses with oxygen giving way to production of more and more carbon dioxide which of course, will be emitted in the air we breathe. Increased level of carbon dioxide along with other gases like methane and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) can add several degrees higher to the temperature, giving way to..uh-oh..global warming. And you know what? Fossil fuel is among the non-renewable providers of energy but we’re now running out of it! Good thing, today’s car makers are finding various ways and means to find other fuel sources. And actually, there are cars now that can run without using fossil fuels! Kudos to their exhausting researches and tests!

So how’s that? Electric and hybrid cars are among the products of this experiment. Our automakers are still conducting their studies for alternative fuel solutions so for sure, there’s still more innovations to come. Who knows, we might use salt water as fuel one of these days. Hot these days are hydrogen fuel cars mounted with internal-combustion engines. Some cars like the BMW are being modified to make it suitable for either hydrogen or gasoline.

Hydrogen is actually stored in an insulated container as a super cooled fuel, situated just behind the back of the passenger seats. The insulation maintains the majority of the hydrogen at 423 degrees F. Now, once the car is running, the entire excess vapor is compelled inside the intake manifold of the vehicle. Here, hydrogen is combined with oxygen and is instilled into the cylinder of the engine to go through combustion process. Hydrogen can be burned faster and cleaner since the end products are nothing but oxygen and water.

We can then conclude that hydrogen powered car is harmless to the environment. It can even be of big help to cut down our skyrocketing fuel expenses since hydrogen sources are cheaper than fossil fuel’s. More importantly, hydrogen fuel does not include any carbon and other pollutants that can be detrimental not only to our environment but to our lives as well. So, why still use costly, harmful gasoline if there are environmentally-friendly, cheaper power sources out there like hydrogen?

Give Way to the Environmentally-friendly Cars

It is a fact; cars are harmful to the environment. Try to stand beside the street packed with cars that run to and fro. Surely, you will notice the smoke they emit. Those are of course not just smokes. They carry substances that can be harmful to the environment—air pollution. Many of the people know this fact but they can’t help not to drive simply because they need too. They need a means for transportation, to transfer from one place to another with ease; the very purpose why a car was made.

Since cars cannot be banned the car designers think of a better alternative. So, the environmentally-friendly cars were given birth. These cars are practical advancement in the auto industry. This way, people may continually enjoy the benefits brought by cars without harming the environment that much.

One example of the environmentally-friendly cars is the “City Car.” The design of this car is only small and light. Therefore, this also has a lower emission of CO2. Because of its small compact this consumes lower fuel consumption. This car design however is usually confined in petrol engine only. One may prefer using this since this model comes in affordable price.

Another example is the “four-wheel drives.” Some of the environmental campaigners claimed that the four-wheel drives are one of the harmful cars to the environment. But as what was mentioned in modal logic, “what is true to some may not be true to all.” Same philosophy may be applicable to the four-wheel drives. Some may be dangerous but some are not. Nowadays, there are four-wheel drives designed to have lower CO2 emissions. In fact, hybrid four-wheel drive models are now running on highways. The four-wheel drive is helpful to the people who are usually tracking a hard terrain. So, the hybrid four-wheel drive is devised to fill in this need.

So, which do you prefer between the environmentally-friendly cars and the environmentally-unfriendly cars? For sure, you’ll prefer the former, right?

Greener Driving

The Earth is currently suffering from climate crisis. And cars are said to be one of the culprits for this. Cars are indeed good-looking; they answer the need for transportation. With the aid of cars, one can transfer from one place to another in no time. However, cars may also be hazardous. The fuel emissions of the cars are lethal to the environment. And if car owners would continue with their “I don’t care” attitude especially when it comes to the negative effects of automobiles in our environment, we would surely, and continually suffer the consequences.)

So here are some tips I learned to minimize, even not to completely eliminate, the destructive effects of cars in our environment. Come and hop in for greener driving!

Minimize the use of air con: Use the air con only if needed. Of course, it’s impractical to use it during autumn, spring and other cold seasons. By doing so, the car’s costly fuel consumption can drop off, and that is just an added bonus. More importantly, the dangerous CO2 emissions are greatly reduced.
Avoid putting the car at rest: When stuck in the middle of the traffic jam, it is better to turn-off the engine. This way, the driver will not only lessen the CO2 emissions but save the fuel and cut the other pollutants as well.
Cruise moderately: One needs to watch out his speed. For instance, it is far better to drive at 65mph than cruising the road at 70mph. This practice is helpful in reducing fuel emissions and consumptions for at least 25%. And that’s already a big cut-off.
Be skillful in reading the road: It is helpful if one can anticipate the possible obstacles on the road. This way, one can avoid heavy breaking. Hence, conserving fuel. This practice will also help in avoiding sharp accelerations and definitely, risky accidents.
Avoid taking short trips: Driving the car for just a few miles is not ideal to the environment since your car may just be warming up. During the warm-up period, fuel emissions and consumptions are on its peak.
Avoid getting lost: Plan ahead when taking a trip to a strange land. Wandering long on the road may only increase fuel emissions, bringing negative effects to the environment.
